Floods and Electrical Safety

Over the past five years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods, and, on average, more deaths occur due to flooding each year than any other weather-related hazard. Safety precautions during floods should include considerations for electrical safety. Guidance from the

Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) includes the following.
· Follow directives from utilities or local authorities to turn off utilities including electricity, gas, and water.
· If your self-storage facility experiences flooding, keep the power off and do not use any electrical equipment or outlets until inspected by a licensed and insured electrician.
· Do not touch a circuit breaker or replace a fuse with wet hands or while standing on a wet surface.
· Take appropriate safety precautions in the event of downed power lines (click here for downed power line safety tips (click here for downed power line safety tips).
