Once a tornado has passed, it is important that you take steps to stay safe while navigating the debris and damage left behind. Here are some tips to keep in mind.
Get Help
Cover your mouth with a cloth to avoid breathing dust. If you are trapped, try to send a text, bang on a pipe or wall, or use a whistle to summon help. If you are not experiencing an emergency, stay off the phone. Phone systems can be overwhelmed after a disaster, so use texts or social media to communicate non-emergency messages.
Watch Out for Hazards
Tornadoes may topple power lines and break utility lines. Take care to avoid these very dangerous hazards. In addition, do not enter damaged buildings until they have been inspected and declared safe. During clean-up, wear thick-soled shoes, long pants, work gloves, and any other necessary protective gear.
Stay Alert for Updates
Keep listening for updates from local authorities and bulletins from the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio.
